Florence, Italy

This morning we will collect you from Hotel Machiavelli Palace (Florence) at approximately 9:00am and drive 1hr to Chianti wine region. A morning collection will give us plenty of time to set-up the bikes and enjoy an afternoon warm up ride. ‘Chianti’ is positioned right in the heart of Tuscany and as many cycling enthusiasts will know is home to the vintage l’Eroica gran fondo ride that is held every October. Tonight you will enjoy a tour welcome dinner with the Sierra guides over a glass or two of the Sangiovese variety!

The Chianti region is loved for its natural beauty, postcard perfect small towns, friendly locals, quality wine and fresh produce. Just quietly, the riding is pretty special as well! Cypress trees, olive groves and lots of fun is what is in store for everyone today!

DAY THREE - Monday 18 MAY 2020
Siena, Tuscany

Cycling from the hotel and we are straight into a few short sections of strada bianca! The white gravel roads make for an exhilarating ride and everyone who rides in Tuscany must experience a few sections for themselves. The cycling follows rolling terrain and the arrival in Piazza del Campo in Siena is a truly special moment. The medieval piazza is one of Europe's greatest squares! The twice-a-year horse-race, Palio di Siena, is held around the edge of this piazza. There will be time to explore Siena over a late lunch before a 45min transfer back to our tour hotel.

DAY FOUR – Tuesday 19 May 2020
Montepulciano, Tuscany

Today´s route heads off from the hotel and towards Asciano and the famous ´Senesi Crete´. The clay fields during earlier days were overworked and abandoned and erosive forces have created a lunar type landscape. Our final destination on the bikes will be Montepulciano which is renowned worldwide for its wine estates.

Over lunch you can sample a bottle of the wonderful Nobile di Montepulciano wine before a 2.5hr van transfer to our next base on the Emilia-Romagna coastline. The group is now in prime position for tomorrow’s 2020 Giro Stage 11 sprint finish in Rimini.

DAY FIVE – Wed 20 May 2020
2020 Giro Stage 11

The Emilia-Romagna coastline is an excellent base for accessing both Stages 11 and 12 of the 2020 Giro d’Italia. Today the ride takes the group in search of two of the Nove Colli Gran Fondo’s most iconic climbs; Barbotto (507m altitude) and Monte Pugliano (791m altitude). The Monte Pugliano climb is the highest point on the course and its 10km climb at 5% average gradient means it is within reach for cyclists of all levels. From this vantage point it is all now downhill as we ride 40km back to the coast where the Giro Stage 11 finish will be contested in Rimini.

Giro d'Italia - Stage 12 (Nove Colli)

Stage 12 of the 2020 Giro rides the full course of the Nove Colli Gran Fondo (205km & 3840m of elevation gain). The Nove Colli is Italy’s oldest gran fondo event and in short stands for ‘Nine Climbs’. We will ride two or three climbs today before intersecting the middle section of the race near the Pieve di Rivoschio climb. Watching the breakaway and peloton pass over a mid-mountain summit will provide great access and photo opportunities. Today is also a tribute to Marco Pantani who grew up and trained in the Cesenatico region so it is going to be a very special day for the locals. As the race moves on we will descend back towards the finish line in Cesenatico with the aim of also seeing the sprint finish!

Treviso, Veneto

Today we take a detour from the Giro race as we move north into Veneto region and in striking distance for tomorrow’s compelling Stage 14 individual time trial in Valdobbiadene. After six strong days on the bike it will time for the guides to assess the condition of the group before selecting the number of km on offer today. The local countryside and small hills between Montebelluno and the river Rio Piave though will provide a beautiful afternoon ride.

Following Stage 14 the race will have been whittled down to a short list of real contenders for the Maglia Rosa. The Prosecco Wine Roads will be a spectacular backdrop for one of the most picturesque stages of the 2020 Giro! To add some additional wow factor we will also scale the Passo San Boldo climb. The road near the summit includes a series of five switchback tunnels carved into the rock. Tonight will be a celebration of many great individual cycling accomplishments, friendships formed and Giro d’Italia appreciation! There is only one way to mark the occasion in true style and that is with a celebratory Spritz!

Stelvio Pass, cycling jersey, maillot

Stelvio Cycling Jersey

The Stelvio Pass is a classic climb from the Giro d'Italia. Our exclusive Stelvio cycling jersey pays homage to the 48 hairpin bends that rise up and up for 25km and which gain 1840 metres of elevation. Passo dello Stelvio (2760 m) is the highest asphalted mountain pass in the Eastern Alpes. When it comes to Giro d’Italia history the Stelvio Pass has been contested on 12 occasions. It first appeared in 1953 when during the penultimate stage the Italian legend Fausto Coppi attacked to take the lead and secure victory in Bormio.

Sella Ronda Cycling Jersey

The Sella Ronda is another favourite cycling route from the Giro d'Italia. The views of the jagged Dolomites limestone peaks, pine forests, alpine meadows and winding roads will be etched into your memory for a lifetime! The Sella Ronda is a loop ride which includes 4 famous Giro d´Italia passes and is one of the world’s most iconic road cycling routes. Our Dolomites Diamonds jersey is a tribute to the loop of climbs which include CampolongoPordoiSella & Gardena! Its relatively low 55km count should not be taken lightly as each pass goes accumulating a total of almost 1850m of elevation gain.

Cycle Sardinia - Italy´s most stunning Mediterranean Island!

Sierra Sports & Tours is looking forward to showcasing 3 big stages of the 2020 Giro d'Italia. When searching for the best Giro action our aim is to select what are truly emblematic and race defining stages!

Stage 12 follows the roads made famous by the Nove Colli Gran Fondo which in 2020 is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Fantastic mountain climbs that are all close to the popular Rimini coastline will make for perfect cycling conditions. Cycling the big passes in the alps can be ‘tricky’ during the Italian spring so this option gives those who love to climb the chance to do so in comfort. For the time trial specialists in our group we have also earmarked the Stage 14 ITT along the Prosecco wine roads. This stage will be sure to shake up the race leader board and you will be captivated by the magnificent vineyard scenery!

By joining us you will experience an authentic Italian travel experience with the first three nights also in the heart of Tuscany. Cycling the Chianti wine region will be a great way to get your 2020 Giro d’Italia cycling tour kick started!
